Weather Goes HD

Weather is an important part of the news on NewsChannel 5, so the weather team was an important part of the launch of high definition and the isntallation of a new set.

Chief Meteorologist Ron Howes takes us on a tour of the all-new Storm 5 HD weather center.

NewsChannel 5's number one in weather is breaking weather -- emergency weather situations where people may be at risk for their lives and property. The new weather set was designed to be a working weather center with everything the weather team needs if they're on the air for five minutes or five hours.

The NewsChannel 5 Storm 5 HD Weather Center is about the only weather center in the country that has this kind of capability built into a single desk or single unit.

NewsChannel 5 has been spending a lot of time with a sister company, Weather Services International out of Andover, Mass., over the last six months developing the system. Their weather system is the most complicated and sophisticated weather system yet developed and delivered anywhere in the country.

The weather is perfect in HD, because it provides greater detail and finer resolution as the weather develops.

Since HD images are huge files for computers to handle, NewsChannel 5 has over 6,000 GB of online storage and some of the fastest computers anywhere handling this weather information.
